Have you ever had a day when you knew exactly what you should be doing—but somehow couldn’t get yourself moving?
You tell yourself you’ll start after one more cup of coffee.
Then after checking your messages.
Then after finishing one small thing.
Before you know it, the day is almost over.
And the frustrating part is that you genuinely want to make progress.
Maybe you’re working toward a personal goal. Perhaps you’re building something for your future, trying to establish healthier routines, studying, growing your career, or simply wanting to become more intentional with your time.
But sometimes progress feels painfully slow.
This is where momentum matters.
Last week, we explored the mindset shifts that help us keep moving. This week, we’re taking that one step further and looking at something much more practical:
What can you actually do today to create momentum?
Coaching Teaching: Momentum Is Built in the Ordinary
We often imagine meaningful change as something dramatic.
A major decision.
A completely new routine.
A life-changing opportunity.
But lasting change is often much quieter.
It happens when you choose to spend fifteen minutes learning something new.
When you put your phone away and focus.
When you take action even though you don’t particularly feel like it.
When you recognise that something isn’t working and decide to change direction.
Momentum grows through repeated action.
You don’t have to transform your entire life this week.
You simply need to create enough movement to keep yourself from becoming stuck.
And sometimes, that begins with something very small.
- Visualise the Woman You’re Becoming
Take a moment to look beyond today.
Where would you like to be six months from now?
What would you like to have accomplished?
More importantly, who would you like to have become?
Perhaps you want to become more organised, disciplined, financially intentional, healthy, confident, peaceful, or purposeful.
Allow yourself to picture that woman.
Then ask:
What would she do today?
Your future doesn’t have to remain an abstract idea. Let it influence the choices you’re making now.
- Get Up and Do Something
When we’re feeling stuck, staying still rarely helps.
Get up.
Take a walk.
Tidy one small area.
Make the phone call.
Open the document.
Prepare the meal.
Do something that creates movement.
You don’t have to feel completely ready before taking action.
Sometimes action changes your energy before your energy changes your willingness to act.
- Keep Your Mind Learning
An active mind creates possibilities.
You don’t need to spend hours studying.
Read ten pages.
Listen to a podcast.
Watch an educational video.
Learn a new skill for fifteen minutes.
Ask someone who knows more than you.
Learning keeps us curious, adaptable, and open to new possibilities.
And sometimes, the thing you learn today becomes the key to tomorrow’s opportunity.
- Act Even When You Don’t Feel Like It
Let’s be honest.
There will be days when motivation is nowhere to be found.
If you make motivation the requirement for action, your progress will always depend on how you feel.
Instead, practise asking:
“What can I do even though I don’t feel like doing it?”
It might only be ten minutes.
That’s okay.
The goal isn’t to force yourself through everything.
The goal is to become someone who can take intentional action even when the mood isn’t perfect.
- Put Your Phone Away
Sometimes the biggest obstacle to momentum isn’t a lack of time.
It’s distraction.
Notifications.
Scrolling.
Messages.
Endless checking.
Try giving yourself one uninterrupted period each day.
Start with 30 minutes.
Put your phone away.
Close unnecessary tabs.
Choose one thing and give it your full attention.
You may be surprised by how much becomes possible when your attention isn’t constantly being pulled somewhere else.
- Know When Something Needs to Change
This one can be difficult.
Sometimes we think keeping momentum means refusing to stop.
But what if the thing you’re doing isn’t working?
Continuing simply because you’ve already invested time and energy doesn’t necessarily create progress.
Sometimes momentum requires a change of direction.
Perhaps you need a different approach.
A different routine.
A different goal.
A different boundary.
Or perhaps you need to let go of something that no longer serves the woman you’re becoming.
Stopping something that isn’t working isn’t always failure.
Sometimes it’s wisdom.
- Do One Thing That Stretches You
Growth rarely happens when everything remains comfortable.
Choose one thing that challenges you.
Have the conversation.
Submit the application.
Ask the question.
Share the idea.
Try something you’ve never tried before.
You don’t have to overhaul your life.
Just stretch yourself a little.
Every time you discover that you can do something you once thought you couldn’t, you expand your sense of what’s possible.
Practical Tips: Make Momentum Easier
You don’t need seven new habits tomorrow.
Choose one.
Here are a few ways to make it easier:
Start ridiculously small.
If ten minutes feels manageable, start with ten minutes.
Attach the habit to something you already do.
For example, read for ten minutes after your morning coffee.
Remove one distraction.
Make it easier to focus by creating an environment that supports your goal.
Track your progress.
A simple tick on a calendar can remind you that you’re showing up.
Give yourself permission to adjust.
If something isn’t working, don’t automatically abandon the goal. Ask whether the method needs to change.
Remember:
Consistency doesn’t mean doing everything perfectly. It means continuing to make intentional choices.
Coaching Reflection Questions
Take a few moments to reflect:
- Where in my life do I need more movement right now?
- What small action would make the biggest difference?
- Which distraction is stealing more of my attention than I’d like to admit?
- What have I been avoiding because I don’t feel motivated?
- Is there something I’m continuing to do that clearly isn’t working?
- What is one area where I could challenge myself to grow?
Fast Action Steps: The 7-Day Momentum Challenge
For the next seven days, choose one small action that will move you closer to an important goal.
Keep it simple.
It could be:
- 10 minutes of reading
- 15 minutes of exercise
- One important email
- 20 minutes working on your business
- Decluttering one drawer
- Preparing tomorrow’s priorities
- Learning something new
At the end of each day, ask yourself:
“Did I do something today that moved me forward?”
If the answer is yes, celebrate it.
If the answer is no, don’t beat yourself up.
Begin again tomorrow.
Momentum isn’t lost because you have one imperfect day.
A Touch of Faith
There are seasons when we want God to show us the entire road ahead.
But often, we are simply called to be faithful with the step that’s in front of us.
You may not know exactly how everything will unfold.
That’s okay.
Take today’s step.
Trust God with tomorrow.
And remember that small acts of faithfulness can become part of something much bigger than we can see right now.
Conclusion & Call to Action
You don’t need a completely new life to create momentum.
You may simply need a new choice.
One small action.
One focused hour.
One habit.
One conversation.
One decision to begin again.
The life you’re working toward is built through the things you repeatedly choose to do—not just the things you intend to do someday.
So don’t wait for the perfect conditions.
Choose one small action.
Do it today.
Then do it again tomorrow.
Your momentum is built one intentional action at a time.
What is the one thing you’re going to do today to move yourself forward?
I’d love to hear from you. Share your commitment in the comments or send me a message.
Own your dreams,
