Resilience: When Life Doesn’t Go According to Plan
When life changes the plan, resilience helps you accept what is, focus on what you can control, and take the next right step.
Have you ever had a plan that seemed so clear?
You knew where you were going. You knew what you wanted. You may even have had the steps mapped out in your mind.
And then… life happened.
The opportunity didn’t come.
The relationship changed.
The job didn’t work out.
The plans you had made suddenly weren’t possible anymore.
Perhaps something completely unexpected entered your life and changed the direction you thought you were heading.
And suddenly, you are left asking:
“What now?”
I think most of us know that feeling.
We like having a plan because a plan gives us a sense of direction and, sometimes, a sense of control. But life doesn’t always follow the plans we make.
And that is where resilience becomes so important.
🌿 Resilience Doesn’t Mean Holding Tightly to the Original Plan
When something doesn’t go according to plan, our first instinct can be to fight reality.
We think:
This wasn’t supposed to happen.
This isn’t what I planned.
Why is this happening to me?
What am I going to do now?
These thoughts are understandable.
Disappointment is real. Grief is real. Frustration is real.
Resilience doesn’t ask us to pretend that we aren’t disappointed.
Instead, resilience invites us to acknowledge what has happened—and then ask:
“How do I move forward from here?”
There is a difference between accepting reality and liking it.
You don’t have to like what happened to accept that it happened.
And acceptance doesn’t mean giving up.
It means stopping the exhausting battle with something you cannot change so that you can begin focusing on what you can do.
💜 Separate What You Expected From What Is
Sometimes the hardest part of an unexpected change is letting go of the picture we had created in our minds.
Perhaps you expected your career to look different by now.
Perhaps you thought a relationship would last.
Perhaps you imagined that a particular opportunity would open a certain door.
Perhaps you had a five-year plan that made perfect sense—until life changed the circumstances.
The challenge is that sometimes we become so attached to how we thought our future would look that we struggle to see the possibilities that still exist.
Your original plan may have changed.
But that doesn’t necessarily mean your future has disappeared.
It may simply look different.
Ask yourself:
What did I expect to happen?
What is actually happening?
What am I finding difficult to accept?
These questions aren’t designed to make you minimise your disappointment.
They are designed to help you see your situation clearly.
Because we make better decisions when we respond to reality rather than fighting against it.
🌱 Focus on What You Can Control
When life feels uncertain, it is easy to spend enormous amounts of energy thinking about everything we cannot control.
Other people’s decisions.
The economy.
The past.
Unexpected circumstances.
What someone else thinks or does.
But resilience grows when we begin bringing our attention back to our own circle of influence.
Ask:
What is within my control right now?
Maybe you can control the next conversation.
Maybe you can control the decision you make today.
Maybe you can ask for help.
Maybe you can learn something new.
Maybe you can change your routine.
Maybe you can take one small step towards a different possibility.
You don’t need to solve your entire future today.
Sometimes you simply need to decide what your next right step is.
🌷 Adapt Without Losing Yourself
Adaptability doesn’t mean becoming whoever circumstances require you to be.
It doesn’t mean abandoning your values, your boundaries, your dreams, or the person you are becoming.
It means being willing to adjust your approach when your circumstances change.
Think of a tree in the wind.
It bends.
It moves.
But it doesn’t stop being a tree.
There is a lesson here for us.
You can change your approach without changing your identity.
You can change the route without abandoning the destination.
You can revise the plan without giving up on the dream.
And sometimes, you may even discover that the new path brings opportunities you could not have seen from the old one.
💪 What If This Is an Invitation to Become More Resourceful?
Unexpected circumstances can reveal abilities we didn’t know we had.
You may discover that you are more creative than you thought.
More courageous.
More resourceful.
More adaptable.
More capable of asking for help.
More willing to try something different.
This doesn’t mean we should romanticise difficult circumstances.
Some seasons are genuinely painful.
But even within difficult seasons, we can ask:
“What can I learn here?”
Not:
“Why did this happen to me?”
But:
“What can I do with where I am now?”
That question moves us from helplessness toward possibility.
🌿 A Few Practical Ways to Build Resilience When Plans Change
Pause before reacting
You don’t have to immediately know what to do.
Give yourself space to process what has happened before making your next decision.
Name what you are feeling
Are you disappointed? Angry? Afraid? Sad? Confused?
Naming an emotion doesn’t make you weak.
It helps you understand what you are experiencing.
Separate facts from assumptions
Ask yourself:
What do I actually know?
And:
What am I assuming about the future?
Sometimes uncertainty becomes even heavier because our minds fill the gaps with worst-case scenarios.
Return to your values
When circumstances change, your values can become an anchor.
Ask:
“What kind of woman do I want to be in this situation?”
You may not be able to control the circumstances.
But you can still choose how you respond.
Look for the next step—not the entire staircase
You don’t need a complete five-year plan when you are standing in the middle of uncertainty.
Sometimes the next step is enough.
One conversation.
One application.
One decision.
One boundary.
One prayer.
One day at a time.
💜 Coaching Corner: Reflect With Me
Take a quiet moment and consider:
What area of my life currently isn’t going according to plan?
What part of this situation is within my control?
What do I need to accept, even though I don’t necessarily like it?
Where might I need to become more flexible?
What is one possibility I haven’t considered yet?
What is one small step I can take from where I am today?
🌱 Your Fast Action Step
This week, choose one situation that has not gone according to plan.
Write down:
What I wanted: ____________________________________________________________________
What happened: ____________________________________________________________________
What I can control: ____________________________________________________________________
What I need to release: ____________________________________________________________________
What I can learn: ____________________________________________________________________
My next step: ____________________________________________________________________
Don’t worry about getting everything right.
Just take the next step.
🙏 A Touch of Faith
There are seasons when we simply don’t understand why things have changed.
We may have prayed about something, planned carefully, worked hard—and still found ourselves facing a completely different reality.
Those moments can test our faith.
But perhaps faith is not always about knowing exactly where the road is leading.
Sometimes it is about trusting enough to take the next step even when we cannot see the whole journey.
A changed plan doesn’t mean God has abandoned the purpose.
Sometimes we simply need to trust Him enough to begin again, adjust our course, and keep walking.
🌷 You Can Bend Without Breaking
Life will not always go according to plan.
There will be unexpected turns.
Closed doors.
Disappointments.
Delays.
Changes we didn’t ask for.
But you don’t have to become unbreakable to navigate them.
You can pause.
You can feel.
You can ask for help.
You can reassess.
You can change direction.
You can begin again.
And you can still become the woman you were created to be.
Your resilience isn’t measured by how perfectly you handle life’s unexpected moments.
It is revealed in your willingness to find your footing, learn from the experience, adapt where necessary, and take another step forward.
So if your life doesn’t look exactly the way you thought it would today, take a breath.
You are not necessarily lost.
Perhaps you’re simply being invited to discover a new way forward.
