Resilience: What to Remember

By Alida Van Staden

You don't have to be unbreakable. You simply need to keep learning how to bend, adapt, regain your footing, and keep going. 💜

September has been about resilience.

But perhaps resilience is one of those words we hear often without always stopping to ask what it really means.

Does being resilient mean always being strong?
Does it mean never falling apart?
Does it mean handling everything on our own?
Does it mean simply pushing through?

I don't believe it does.

Throughout this month, we've explored a gentler and more realistic understanding of resilience.

Resilience isn't about becoming unbreakable.

It's about learning how to meet life's challenges without losing ourselves in the process.

And as we close September, I'd like to leave you with a few things to remember.

🌿 1. You Don't Have to Be Unbreakable

Life will challenge you.

There will be unexpected changes, disappointments, difficult conversations, uncertain seasons and days when you simply don't feel like yourself.

Being resilient doesn't mean those things won't affect you.

You are allowed to feel.
You are allowed to struggle.
You are allowed to grieve.
You are allowed to say, “This is hard.”

Strength isn't the absence of struggle.
You can struggle and still be resilient.

🌿 2. Not Everything Is Within Your Control

Sometimes life doesn't go according to plan.

We can spend so much energy wishing circumstances were different that we miss the opportunity to ask:

“What can I do with what I have now?”

You may not be able to control what happened.
You may not be able to control another person's choices.
You may not be able to change the past.

But you can choose your response.

You can choose what you focus on.
You can choose whether to ask for help.
You can choose your next step.

Acceptance doesn't mean you like what happened. It means you stop fighting reality long enough to decide what you can do next.

💜 3. Your Emotions Are Part of the Journey

Being emotionally resilient doesn't mean keeping your emotions under control at all times.

Your emotions are part of being human.

Instead of judging yourself for what you feel, try becoming curious about it.

What am I feeling?
What might this emotion be telling me?
What do I need right now?

And then give yourself a moment to choose your response.

Remember our simple September reminder:

Pause. Notice. Choose.

You don't have to react simply because you feel something strongly.

Sometimes the pause between the feeling and the response is where your resilience grows.

🌱 4. Adaptability Is Not Giving Up

When your plans change, you may need to change your approach too.

That doesn't necessarily mean abandoning your dreams.

It may mean finding another route.

You can change the plan without changing who you are.

You can adjust without losing your values.

You can take a different path without giving up on what matters to you.

Sometimes resilience looks less like pushing forward and more like learning how to move differently.

🌷 5. Rest Is Not Weakness

We live in a world that can make us feel as though we always need to be doing something.

But resilience isn't about constantly pushing yourself beyond your limits.

Sometimes the most helpful thing you can do is stop.

Rest.
Breathe.
Recover.
Give yourself space.

And then, when you're ready, decide what comes next.

You don't have to earn the right to rest by reaching breaking point first.

💜 6. You Don't Have to Do It Alone

One of the misconceptions about strength is that strong women should be able to handle everything themselves.

But asking for help can be an act of resilience.

Talk to someone you trust.
Allow yourself to be supported.
Share what you're carrying.
Reach out when you need encouragement.

And remember that there are times when professional support may also be the right step.

Being supported doesn't make you less capable.

Sometimes having someone walk beside you helps you find your footing again.

🌿 7. You Can Learn From Difficult Seasons

Not every difficult experience needs to have a positive meaning.

Some things are simply painful.

But with time and reflection, we can sometimes discover what those experiences taught us.

Maybe you learned about your boundaries.
Maybe you discovered a strength you didn't know you had.
Maybe you learned to ask for help.
Maybe you became more compassionate.
Maybe you learned what you will—and won't—accept going forward.

The lesson doesn't erase the difficulty.

But it can become part of your growth.

🌱 8. Resilience Is Built One Step at a Time

You don't have to become a completely different woman overnight.

Resilience is built through small choices.

One healthy response.
One difficult conversation.
One boundary.
One prayer.
One moment of rest.
One decision to ask for help.
One attempt after disappointment.
One step forward.

And sometimes, one step back to regroup before moving forward again.

Small steps count.

🌷 Your September Resilience Takeaway

As we close this month's theme, take a moment to complete these statements:

When life doesn't go according to plan, I want to remember...
___________________________________________________________________________________

When my emotions feel overwhelming, I can...
___________________________________________________________________________________

When I need to adapt, I will remind myself...
___________________________________________________________________________________

When I need support, I can reach out to...
___________________________________________________________________________________

When I need to rest, I give myself permission to...
___________________________________________________________________________________

When I feel like I've lost my footing, my next small step can be...
___________________________________________________________________________________

And finally:

My biggest takeaway from September is...
___________________________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________________________

🙏 A Touch of Faith

Perhaps the greatest reminder we can carry into the next season is that we don't have to know exactly what lies ahead.

We can make our plans.
We can prepare.
We can do our part.

But there will always be things beyond our control.

And that is where faith can become an anchor.

We can trust God with what we cannot control while still taking responsibility for what we can.

We don't need to see the whole road.

Sometimes we simply need enough faith for the next step.

🌿 Take This With You

If you remember nothing else from our September journey, remember this:

You don't have to be unbreakable.
You are allowed to feel.
You are allowed to rest.
You are allowed to ask for help.
You are allowed to change your plans.
You are allowed to take your time.
You are allowed to start again.

And you are allowed to move forward differently than you once imagined.

Resilience isn't about becoming someone who never bends.

It's learning how to bend without losing yourself.
It's learning how to adapt without abandoning who you are.
It's learning how to regain your footing when you've stumbled.

And it's trusting yourself—and God—to take the next step.

So as September comes to an end, don't put pressure on yourself to become more resilient overnight.

Instead, take what you've learned.

Choose one thing you want to practise.

Give yourself grace.

And keep going.

Because resilience isn't something you either have or don't have.

It is something you can continue to build.
