Resilience: The Strength You Discover When You Keep Going
Resilience grows when we look back with compassion, recognise what difficult seasons have taught us, honour our growth, and acknowledge the strength we've developed.
Have you ever looked back at something you went through and thought, “I don't know how I got through that”?
Maybe it was a season of uncertainty. A relationship that changed. A difficult decision. A disappointment you didn't see coming. A loss that left you trying to find your footing again.
At the time, you may not have felt strong.
You may have cried. You may have questioned yourself. You may have needed help. You may have taken a break. You may even have wondered whether you would ever feel like yourself again.
And yet, here you are.
Sometimes we are so focused on getting through a difficult season that we don't stop to notice what it has developed within us.
Resilience isn't only about how we handle what is happening today. It is also about recognizing the strength we have already built by walking through yesterday.
🌿 Sometimes We Don't Recognise Our Own Strength
When we think about strength, we often imagine someone who is confident, composed and able to handle anything life throws at them.
But real strength can look very different.
Sometimes strength is getting out of bed when your heart feels heavy.
Sometimes it is making a difficult decision.
Sometimes it is saying, “I need help.”
Sometimes it is setting a boundary.
Sometimes it is allowing yourself to grieve.
Sometimes it is walking away from what no longer serves you.
And sometimes strength is simply taking the next step when you don't know exactly where the road is leading.
You don't have to have handled every difficult situation perfectly for it to have made you stronger.
You can struggle and still grow.
You can be afraid and still be courageous.
You can feel broken and still be rebuilding.
That is part of resilience.
💜 Look Back With Compassion, Not Criticism
When we look back at difficult seasons, it is easy to focus on what we should have done differently.
I should have been stronger.
I should have seen it coming.
I should have handled it better.
I should have moved on sooner.
But what if you looked back with compassion instead?
What if you asked:
What was I doing with the strength, knowledge and resources I had at the time?
Perhaps you didn't know then what you know now.
Perhaps you hadn't yet learned how to set that boundary.
Perhaps you didn't yet know how to ask for help.
Perhaps you were simply doing your best to get through the day.
Growth gives us a new perspective on old situations.
Instead of judging the woman you were, you can appreciate the woman who kept going.
🌱 What Did That Season Teach You?
Every difficult season doesn't necessarily come with an obvious lesson. Sometimes, we simply experience something painful, and the meaning becomes clearer much later.
But when you're ready, looking back can help you discover what has changed within you.
Perhaps you discovered that you are more capable than you thought.
Perhaps you learned to speak up.
Perhaps you learned to slow down.
Perhaps you became more intentional about who you allow into your life.
Perhaps you discovered that asking for help isn't weakness.
Perhaps you learned that your plans can change without your life losing its purpose.
Or perhaps you discovered something even more important:
You can survive moments you once believed you couldn't.
And knowing that can change the way you face the next difficult season.
🌷 Resilience Leaves Evidence Behind
We sometimes look for evidence of growth in big achievements.
But resilience leaves quieter evidence too.
It may be the boundary you now have.
The conversation you are no longer afraid to have.
The way you recover more quickly after disappointment.
The way you recognise when you need rest.
The fact that you no longer believe every negative thought that enters your mind.
The ability to ask for support instead of carrying everything alone.
The courage to adapt when life doesn't go according to plan.
These are signs of growth.
You may not be the same woman you were before that difficult season—and that isn't necessarily a bad thing.
Perhaps you have become more aware.
More compassionate.
More discerning.
More courageous.
More grounded.
More willing to trust yourself.
Sometimes resilience is not about becoming harder. It's about becoming wiser, more flexible and more deeply rooted in who you are.
💜 Coaching Corner: Take a Look Back
Set aside a few quiet minutes this week and think about a difficult season you have already walked through.
You don't need to choose the hardest experience of your life. Choose something you feel ready to reflect on.
Ask yourself:
• What was happening in my life at that time?
• How did I feel while I was going through it?
• What helped me keep going?
• Who supported me?
• What did I learn about myself?
• What strength did I discover?
• What do I handle differently today because of that experience?
• What would I say to the woman I was then?
• What am I proud of myself for?
And perhaps the most important question:
What have I survived that I once thought I couldn't?
Don't rush your answers.
Sometimes we need to pause long enough to recognise how far we've actually come.
🌷 Fast Action Step: Your Resilience Evidence
Take a piece of paper and write down three difficult situations you have already overcome.
For each one, complete these sentences:
I went through:
__________________________________________________________________________________
What helped me was:
__________________________________________________________________________________
I learned:
__________________________________________________________________________________
A strength I discovered was:
__________________________________________________________________________________
Today, I know that I can:
__________________________________________________________________________________
Keep this somewhere you can return to when you're facing another difficult moment.
Because when the next challenge comes, you may need a reminder that you have evidence.
You've done hard things before.
You have learned before.
You have adapted before.
You have found your footing before.
And you can draw on that strength again.
🙏 A Touch of Faith
Sometimes we only see God's faithfulness clearly when we look back.
There may have been moments when you couldn't see the way forward, yet somehow you kept moving.
Perhaps the answer didn't come in the way you expected. Perhaps the road changed. Perhaps you had to wait.
But looking back can remind us that we were never walking alone.
“I will strengthen you and help you.” — Isaiah 41:10
You don't have to know exactly how everything will work out.
Sometimes faith is simply trusting God with the next step—and looking back with gratitude for the steps He has already carried you through.
🌿 You Are Still Becoming
Resilience doesn't mean that difficult seasons don't affect us.
They do.
They can change us.
But they can also reveal things within us that we didn't know were there.
The woman who walked through that difficult season may have felt uncertain, afraid, exhausted or overwhelmed.
But she kept going.
And perhaps that is something worth honouring.
Not because she did everything perfectly.
Not because she was unbreakable.
But because she found a way to bend, adapt, regain her footing and keep moving forward.
So this week, don't only look at how far you still have to go.
Look back at how far you've come.
Recognise the lessons.
Honour the growth.
Acknowledge the strength.
And remember:
You are stronger than the version of yourself who once thought she couldn't make it through.
You are still becoming her.
And every difficult season you've walked through has given you another piece of the woman you are becoming.
🌷 Your Challenge This Week
Look back at one difficult season of your life and write down five things it taught you about yourself.
Then finish this sentence:
“Because I have walked through ____________, I now know that I can ____________.”
Keep that sentence close.
It may become a reminder of your resilience when you need it most.
You don't have to be unbreakable to be resilient.
You simply need to learn how to bend, adapt, regain your footing, and keep going.
